Event Details

Mottisfont, Near Romsey, SO51 0LP

The SHVPS has never visited this relatively local, National Trust property before as a group, although NT members will almost certainly be familiar with the beautiful grounds, especially the famous rose gardens. Originally a medieval manor house, it became home to Maud Russell, who invited artists to stay, resulting in an incredible trompe l’oeil drawing room painted by Rex Whistler. More recently, the vaulted Cellarium was used as a backdrop in scenes from the Christmas 2019 BBC adaptation of Dracula! There is a permanent display of 20th Century art and changing exhibitions on the upper floors of the house where, during our visit, there will be witty works from some of Britain’s best cartoonists on display.

On site there is a NT shop which also sells plants, and refreshments are available ether at the Old Kitchen in the house, which serves hot meals, or the Coach House Café in the old stables, serving light lunches. Alternatively, there are local pubs, if members prefer to make their own arrangements, or simply take a picnic and enjoy the grounds.

Members are advised to wear suitable footwear as both the car park and some paths may well be muddy at this time of year.

We have secured a group rate, further discounted from £13.70 to £9 pp by SHVPS for Society members who do not belong to the NT, enabling them to also enjoy this beautiful house and estate for the day. Guests are also welcome and will benefit from the group rate of £13.70pp if booked in advance.

Please book up using the form below, including NT members, as they count towards the group discount, and return your form with payment if required, to John Stoodley, details below. If you’re intending to go and are a member of both SHVPS and NT, it would make sense to reply confirming this along with your membership number via email or by phone, thus saving unnecessary paperwork and postage.

Closing date is Friday 14th February.
